Animal and crop production in the College of Agriculture amidst the challenges of mobility
The College of Agriculture continues its Income Generating Projects (IGPs) on animal and crop production through its different departments amidst the challenges of mobility brought by the COVID-19 pandemic. These IGPs include rice and seedling production, the Itik Pinas, the Layers project, and the Native Pig Production project. The rice production, being spearheaded by the Department of Crop Science (DCS), has a total land area of 11.74 ha—of which 9.12 ha is used for production and 2.62 ha is allocated for research purposes. The land area is being planted with different varieties of rice such as Long Ping 937, SL20, NSIC Rc222, Rc480, Rc216, and Rc160.

Another project is the Ornamental Crops Nursery in 0.2 ha land in front of the DCS which is an enclosed instructional facility, with propagation beds, net house, working shed, different ornamental plants, palms, shrubs, flowering plants such as crotons, and other foliage plants that serve as a source of propagation materials for students' hands-on activities, plants for the College of Agriculture's landscaping purposes, and potted plants for sale. The DCS also produces ornamental plants which are being used in decorating the graduation site as well as the college’s conference hall, especially when there are official programs such as graduation, conferences, and other special events. Ornamental Crops Nursery aims to support the college that will soon become an agri-tourism site.
The Department of Crop Protection (DCP) is working on Beekeeping and Butterfly Farm. These projects are producing and maintaining stingless bees Tetragonula biroi with six (6) colonies maintained in a 4x6 m shed, and butterflies Papilio sp., Catopsila sp., and Troides rhadamanthus occupying around 500 sqm within the vicinity of the DCP where flowering plants are available as bees and butterflies pasture.
The Department of Animal Science (DAS) originally has three (3) existing projects as IGPs namely the Itik Pinas, Layers Project, and the Native Pig Project. The Itik Pinas Project, occupying a space at the back of the college, is maintaining two (2) Itik Pinas—Itik Pinas-Itim and Itik Pinas-Khaki—with one (1) brooding house, two (2) laying house, three (3) incubators with 2000-egg capacity and two (2) storage rooms. The Layers, located at the back of the DAS, is keeping Dekalb white strains of layer chickens while the Native Pigs Project is still on hold in production since the surge of the African Swine Flu.
Through its production projects, the College of Agriculture has been imparting knowledge and skills to its main clients – the students and the essential services to the community, from the market supply coming from the produces up to the transfer of knowledge in the production, research, and on-farm trainings.
